Refractive Lens Exchange in Boise, Idaho
See clearly for life, no cataracts, no glasses.
What Is Refractive Lens Exchange?
Refractive lens exchange, also called RLE or clear lens exchange, is one of the most effective ways to permanently reduce or eliminate your dependence on glasses or contacts. By replacing your natural lens with a precisely selected intraocular lens implant (IOL), Dr. Kent can correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, and presbyopia in a single outpatient procedure.
Refractive lens exchange involves the surgical removal of the eye's natural clear lens and its replacement with an advanced IOL. The procedure is essentially identical to cataract surgery. The key difference is that RLE is performed on a lens that hasn't yet become cloudy, with the primary goal of correcting your prescription rather than treating a cataract.
In some cases, the natural lens may have an early cataract that doesn't significantly affect corrected vision. In those situations, RLE addresses both the prescription and any early cataract in a single step.
For most RLE patients, a premium multifocal or extended-depth-of-focus IOL is selected, delivering a full range of clear vision from near to far and allowing patients to spend most of their day without glasses.
Who Is a Good Candidate for RLE?
RLE is particularly well-suited for:
- Adults over 40–45 who are beginning to experience presbyopia, the gradual loss of near focus that makes reading glasses necessary
- Patients who are not good LASIK or PRK candidates due to corneal thickness, high prescription, or other factors
- Patients with early cataracts who want to address both their prescription and their cataract in one procedure
- Anyone seeking a permanent, long-term solution to glasses or contacts who wants to avoid future cataract surgery
Because RLE removes the natural lens entirely, it also eliminates the risk of future cataracts, a meaningful long-term benefit for many patients in their 40s and 50s.

How Is RLE Different from LASIK?
LASIK reshapes the cornea using a laser to correct vision, leaving the natural lens in place. Refractive lens exchange is performed from within the eye, removing the natural lens and replacing it with a premium IOL. This makes RLE a strong option for patients with presbyopia or high prescriptions outside LASIK's treatment range, and for those who want to address both near and distance vision in a single procedure.
What Lens Options Are Available?
The same premium lens platforms used in cataract surgery are available for RLE. Dr. Kent will recommend the lens that best fits your vision goals and lifestyle:
- PanOptix trifocal IOL: full range of near, intermediate, and distance vision
- Vivity extended depth of focus IOL: continuous distance and intermediate vision with improved near, and reduced risk of halos and glare
- Toric IOL: astigmatism correction built into the lens, available in both standard and premium platforms
What to Expect with Refractive Lens Exchange
RLE is performed as an outpatient procedure and typically takes less than 15 minutes per eye. Your eye is numbed with drops, so you won't feel pain. Recovery is rapid, with most patients noticing significant improvement in vision within 24 hours. Eyes are typically treated one at a time, with treatment spaced 1 to 2 weeks apart.
