PRK Laser Vision Correction in Boise, Idaho
A trusted alternative to LASIK with the same outstanding results.
How PRK Works
Serving patients from Boise and throughout the Treasure Valley, The Eye Associates offers PRK laser vision correction at our offices in Meridian and Caldwell. PRK uses the same WaveLight EX500 excimer laser that Dr. Kent uses for LASIK. The difference is in how the cornea is prepared before treatment.
In LASIK, a thin flap is created in the cornea using the iFS femtosecond laser. In PRK, there is no flap. Instead, the outermost layer of the cornea (the epithelium) is gently removed to expose the underlying corneal tissue. The excimer laser then reshapes the cornea with pinpoint precision, correcting your prescription just as it would in LASIK. Over the following days, the epithelium naturally regenerates.
The end result is the same: permanent vision correction with the same advanced laser technology.
PRK vs. LASIK: Which Is Right for You?
Both procedures use identical laser technology and deliver equivalent long-term visual outcomes. The differences come down to the first step and the recovery timeline.
PRK is often recommended when:
- Corneal thickness is insufficient for safe flap creation
- The corneal shape or surface is irregular
- Lifestyle or occupation involves a higher risk of eye impact (certain athletes or military personnel, for example)
- A previous eye surgery makes flap creation inadvisable
- PRK is also used for patients who have significant dryness. It is a better procedure for minimizing dryness.
LASIK may be preferred when:
- Recovery speed is a priority
- The cornea has adequate thickness and a suitable profile
During your free consultation, Dr. Kent will evaluate your corneal measurements, prescription, and eye health to recommend the procedure that best suits your eyes.
What to Expect with PRK
During the procedure: Numbing drops are applied before treatment, and you won't feel pain. The procedure itself takes only minutes per eye.
Recovery timeline: PRK takes a bit longer to heal than LASIK. Most patients have comfortable, functional vision within about one week, and crisp, stabilized vision within one month. Vision may fluctuate slightly during the healing period. This is completely normal.
Post-procedure care: You'll use prescribed eye drops for several weeks as the epithelium heals and the cornea stabilizes. A protective contact lens is typically worn for the first few days after treatment. Dr. Kent and our team will guide you through every step of your recovery at your follow-up visits.
Same Technology. Same Results.
PRK has been performed successfully for decades and has an outstanding long-term safety record. The WaveLight EX500 excimer laser Dr. Kent uses for PRK is the same system used for LASIK, meaning you're getting the same level of precision, personalization, and outcome regardless of which procedure is right for you.
