Cataract Lens Implants in Boise, Idaho

The right lens changes everything.

What Is an IOL?

Choosing the right lens implant is one of the most important decisions in the cataract surgery process. Dr. Kent takes the time to understand your lifestyle, vision goals, and daily habits before recommending the right options for you.

An intraocular lens (IOL) is a small, lightweight artificial lens permanently placed inside the eye during cataract surgery. Modern IOLs are precision-engineered to your exact prescription and can be designed to deliver clear vision across a range of distances, often significantly reducing or eliminating the need for glasses after surgery.

Every intraocular lens implant is customized for the patient and that specific eye. The right IOL depends on your prescription, the degree of any astigmatism, your lifestyle, and how much you'd like to rely on glasses after your procedure. Dr. Kent offers all major premium lens platforms.

Full Range of Vision Implant

The Alcon PanOptix is the first and only FDA-approved trifocal IOL in the United States, delivering clear vision at near, intermediate, and far distances with a single lens. For patients who want the broadest possible reduction in glasses dependence, PanOptix is a highly effective option.

PanOptix may be a great fit if you want to:

  • Read books, menus, and phone screens without reaching for readers
  • Work comfortably at a computer without glasses
  • Drive, play sports, and move through the world glasses-free
Extend Depth of Focus Implant

The AcrySof IQ Vivity is the first and only non-diffractive extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) IOL. Unlike multifocal lenses that split light into focal points, Vivity works by bending light, delivering an uninterrupted, continuous range of vision from distance through intermediate, with meaningfully improved near vision, but most patients will still require glasses for small things like continuous reading.

Because Vivity doesn't split light, patients typically experience fewer halos and starbursts around lights at night compared to traditional multifocal designs. Dr. Kent finds the Vivity lens delivers high-quality, full-range vision with minimal side effects for the right patient.

Pure SEE Implant by Johnson and Johnson is another lens option.

Vivity provides:

  • Better quality mid-range and distance vision
  • Sharper night vision with reduced halos, starbursts, and glare
  • UV and blue light filtering to protect your eyes from sunlight and screens

Vivity may be a strong choice if:

  • Excellent distance and computer vision are your top priorities
  • You drive frequently or are particularly sensitive to glare at night
  • You want a premium outcome with a lower risk of light disturbances than older multifocal designs
Toric IOL: Astigmatism Correction Built In

A toric IOL is a lens with astigmatism correction built directly into the implant. If you have astigmatism, where the cornea is shaped more like a football than a basketball, a standard IOL alone may leave some residual blur. A toric lens corrects that irregularity, often allowing patients to enjoy sharp distance vision without glasses.

There are two ways Dr. Kent corrects astigmatism during cataract surgery. The preferred method is a toric IOL. Toric lenses are available in both standard and premium platforms, meaning they can be paired with any of the above mentioned premium interoperable lenses if you also want near-vision correction.

How Does Dr. Kent Choose the Right Lens for You?

During your cataract evaluation, Dr. Kent and our team take precise measurements of your eye, including corneal curvature, axial length, and astigmatism. He'll also spend time understanding how you spend your days: what you do for work, what hobbies matter most to you, how much screen time you have, how often you drive at night, and how important it is to you to be glasses-free.

Based on all of this, he'll make a personalized recommendation and walk you through the tradeoffs of each option honestly and clearly. There is no one-size-fits-all lens. The right choice is the one that matches your eyes and your life. Every implant for the patient and the eye.
