What Is Presbyopia?

If you're over 40 and find yourself constantly reaching for reading glasses, you're not alone, and you don't have to accept it as your only option. The Eye Associates offers the KAMRA inlay, an FDA-approved treatment for presbyopia that restores near vision and reduces your dependence on reading glasses.

Presbyopia is the gradual loss of the eye's ability to focus on nearby objects, which is why most people start needing reading glasses sometime in their 40s or 50s. It happens to nearly everyone as the natural lens in the eye becomes less flexible with age.

Even patients who had LASIK earlier in life and enjoy excellent distance vision will eventually develop presbyopia. Glasses, contacts, and monovision correction have long been the standard solutions, but the KAMRA inlay offers an alternative.

What Is the KAMRA Inlay?

The KAMRA inlay is a tiny, ring-shaped device, smaller and thinner than a soft contact lens, that is placed within the cornea of your non-dominant eye. It works using a small-aperture principle: a tiny central opening in the ring allows only focused light to enter the eye, extending the depth of focus and restoring the ability to see clearly up close.

Your dominant eye is left untouched, continuing to provide clear distance vision. The result is natural-looking near vision without the blur in the distance that can come with other monovision approaches.

The KAMRA inlay received FDA approval in 2015 and is the only FDA-approved corneal inlay for presbyopia treatment in the United States.

What Can the KAMRA Inlay Help With?

  • Reading text messages, menus, and books without reaching for readers
  • Seeing your phone screen clearly
  • Reducing dependence on reading glasses for everyday tasks
  • Restoring near vision for patients who already have good distance vision

Is the KAMRA Inlay Right for You?

The KAMRA inlay is best suited for adults aged 45 to 60 with good uncorrected distance vision but struggling with near vision due to presbyopia. It is not designed for patients with cataracts or those who need significant distance correction.

The best way to find out whether you're a candidate is to consult with Dr. Kent. He'll evaluate your corneal health, prescription, and vision goals to determine whether the KAMRA inlay or another approach, such as refractive lens exchange or multifocal IOLs, is the right fit for your eyes.

What to Expect with KAMRA Inlay

The KAMRA inlay procedure takes approximately 30 minutes and is performed in our office. A laser creates a small pocket in the cornea, and the inlay is precisely placed within it. No stitches are required. Most patients can resume normal activities the following day.
