YAG Laser Capsulotomy in Boise, Idaho

Same-day clarity after cataract surgery.

What Is a Secondary Cataract?

If your vision has become cloudy or hazy months or years after cataract surgery, you're not alone, and it's not your cataract coming back. It's a very common and completely treatable condition, and a quick laser procedure called YAG capsulotomy can restore your clear vision the same day.

During cataract surgery, the back membrane of the natural lens, called the posterior capsule, is intentionally left in place to support the artificial lens implant. This membrane is normally clear, but in about 1 out of 3 surgeries, it gradually develops wrinkles or cloudiness in the months or years after surgery.

This is sometimes called a "secondary cataract," though it isn't actually a cataract at all. It's a normal healing response where scar tissue forms on the posterior capsule. When this cloudiness begins to interfere with your vision, a YAG laser capsulotomy is the solution.

What Is a YAG Laser Capsulotomy?

YAG laser capsulotomy is a quick, painless outpatient procedure in which Dr. Kent uses a focused laser beam to create a small, precise opening in the cloudy posterior capsule. This allows light to pass through freely again, restoring clear vision almost immediately.

The procedure is performed right in our office, takes only a few minutes per eye, and requires no incisions, stitches, or anesthesia beyond numbing eye drops. There is no meaningful recovery period. Most patients notice improved vision within hours.

Is It the Same as Cataract Surgery?

There is a common misconception that cataracts are removed with a laser, but this confusion arises partly because many cataract patients eventually need YAG capsulotomy. The two procedures are entirely separate. YAG capsulotomy is never part of the original cataract operation, and is significantly simpler and lower risk.

The risks associated with YAG capsulotomy are approximately 1/100th of those associated with cataract surgery. The most serious potential complication is retinal detachment, which is rare. Warning signs include a sudden dark curtain appearing over your side vision or a noticeable increase in flashing lights. If you experience either of these symptoms after your procedure, contact us immediately at (208) 342-5151.

What to Expect with YAG Laser Capsulotomy

  • Eye drops are applied to dilate your pupils before the procedure
  • Dr. Kent uses the YAG laser to create a small opening in the cloudy membrane. You may notice brief flashes of light
  • The procedure takes only a few minutes and is painless
  • You'll rest briefly in the office before heading home
  • Vision typically begins to improve within hours
  • A short follow-up visit confirms that your eye pressure has returned to normal
